This award was presented to the Historical Buildings Section of Dubai Municipality in recognition of its efforts in restoring the Sheikh Saeed House. The house, which dates back to 1896, was built at a total area of 3600 square meters. The two-storied house has two main entrances, several rooms and vast terraces. Architectural skills of the bygone era are evident in its construction. The ambitious Dhs8 million renovation project, which began in 1986, saw the building’s restoration to its former glory. The building now houses an impressive exhibition of photographs, paintings, lithographs and art objects that vividly portray the early development of the emirate.- Date

The United Nations Center for Human Settlements has awarded the Habitat Scroll of Honor to the Director General of Dubai Municipality, the first Arab to receive such an honor, in recognition of his vital role in instituting and supporting comprehensive and sustainable development plans for Dubai city. This award was presented to Dubai Municipality in recognition of its efforts to green the emirate. Major works, undertaken as part of this landscaping, are planting trees across the emirate, spreading green areas in order to create a beautiful appearance for the city and increase the proportion of oxygen in order to provide a healthy environment for the emirate’s residents. This has also reinforced the municipality’s efforts in curbing air pollution. The landscaping works have also helped solidify soil and reduce sand accumulation due to winds. The ICCC Pioneer Award for outstanding achievement and contribution to world betterment was won by Dubai Municipality in recognition of the Dubai International Award for Best Practices to Improve the Living Environment. His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, established this pioneering award to encourage and enhance awareness of the pressing need in urban and rural settlements for people everywhere. It is a tribute to the excellent work and dedication of HE the Director General of Dubai Municipality to Human Settlement improvements worldwide. This award, which was initialed for the first time, was given to Khadija Yaqoob Abdulla, a training officer in IT department, who received this award as an appreciation for her distinguished productivity in the training field. She was able to produce a number of training manuals in both Arabic & English Languages in such a short period of time. Following the approval of His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, His Excellency Qassim Sultan, Director General of Dubai Municipality, has been chosen as the Good Will Ambassador of the UNCHS in recognition of the distinguished role he played over the past 15 years in establishing a pioneer model of urban development in Dubai. The model has got international acclaim and many international organizations have recognized this role. HE Sultan has already got the UNCHS medal for being the moving force behind organizing the largest conference of the Habitat II Award in 1995.It was in this conference the famous Dubai Declaration was born, which led to the setting up of the Dubai International Award for Best Practices to Improve the Living Environment, which has already become famous world-wide thanks- Date

Dubai Municipality has won this prestigious award, which was instituted by the Arab Housing and Urban Minister Council, a subsidiary of Cairo-based Arab League, for an outstanding government housing project in Hatta. The award was presented to Dubai Municipality during the 18th congress of the council, which was held in the Egyptian capital. The project, a residential complex of 88 houses, represented the second phase of an ambitious plan to replace old houses in the Hatta heritage area of the Emirate of Dubai with modern housing units matching the beautiful surroundings and the local mountainous environment.- Date

This award, which comes under the category of Municipal Projects and Services, was won by Dubai Municipality for its ambitious Hatta Heritage Village project during the ninth conference of the Organization of Islamic Capitals and Cities (OICC), which was held in February 2001 at Cairo. The municipality was cited for discovering the mountainous heritage village of Hatta and restoring it in two phases at a total cost of Dhs 15 million. The Food Control Section of the Municipality won this award. The award winning experience is the inspection process on food establishments using portable computers whereby the municipality linked all activities of the Food Control Section using computers in harmony with the municipality’s drive to make use of the latest technology for the benefit of the society. This experience helped increase the standard of public health in various food premises and reduce the number of food inspectors required for the large number of food establishments in the emirate. This enabled the inspectors to reduce mistakes in preparing the reports, prepare electronic reports and connect the work of all units in a faster and more efficient way.- Date

Dr. Hamid Ibrahim Hattal, Planning Specialist at the Planning Studies Section, won this prize in the area of urban planning and his contributions in preparing the Dubai Structural Plan. Dr. Hattal is also known for being creative, productive and taking initiative in his work. He always keeps good relations with his colleagues and participates in all events organized by the Municipality. The head of Dubai Zoo received the award from the Emirates Natural History Group in recognition of his work to create awareness and help conserve the biodiversity of the UAE. Dr Reza Khan received the Sheikh Mubarak bin Mohammed Al Nahyan Award which is presented annually to those who have contributed to scientific research and publishing in the UAE. The winner is selected from a list of nominations submitted by members of the Natural History Group in Dubai, Al Ain and Abu Dhabi, Dr Reza Khan was selected for his outstanding work, especially on trees and reptiles, along with the professional development of Dubai Zoo through projects such as the breeding of indigenous species from the UAE.- Date

Dubai City has won the Cannes International Water Award, during its third session held in the French City, for efficiently recycling wastewater, finding new uses for it and turning Dubai into a green oasis in the desert. The Municipality has succeeded in using the drainage water for irrigating the landscape projects in and around the city thereby protecting underground water and saving scarce drinking water, which was initially used for irrigation.- Date

Engineer Hassan Mohammed Makki, Head of Waste Services Section was recognized for efforts to establish an efficient solid waste collection system in Dubai in the context of challenges such as rapid development and urban growth. His work has also enhanced awareness about waste issues in the Emirate besides developing a greater appreciation for municipal waste services. His primary accomplishment is the realigning of municipal waste services in a direction consistent with internationally accepted principles such as sustainable development. He has also streamlined management processes to reflect current realities and fostered a customer focused approach in the delivery of services.- Date

Dubai Municipality’s Public Parks and Horticulture Department won this award during the Dubai Shopping Festival 2001 for organizing several major entertainment shows in Dubai’s parks. Dubai Municipality won the King Abdullah II Award for Innovation in the field of Environmental Pollution among the Arab cities. Qassim Sultan, Director General of Dubai Municipality received the award from His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan at a ceremony held on the occasion at the Jordanian capital on 17th December 2002. It is the detailed study conducted by Dubai Municipality on pollution control in Dubai that has qualified it to receive the first position among the 26 studies presented by different organizations to win this award.- Date

Dubai Municipality has taken the initiative of implementing the thermal insulation systems in buildings in Dubai which will eventually help in saving energy. The idea of using thermal insulation in buildings is very well known long time ago. However, the distinguished teqnique followed by DM in implementing the system helped to large extent in success of its use. The Municipality has used different means such as regulations, advertising campaign ,conferences , and seminars that helped a lot in increase of awareness of all concerned parties. The Municipality has given 22 months of volunteer implementation of regulation to give people chance to get use to it before it is mandatory use. This has helped in its success to large extent.- Date

Dubai Municipality managed to enter the Guinness Book of Records on 12 February 2003 for producing the largest flower carpet at Al Safa Park as part of the activities during the Dubai Shopping Festival in 2003 . Ms. Zohoor Al Sabbagh of the Public Health Department has won this award in recognition of her constructive role in establishing a mobile clinic which facilitates medical fitness tests for expatriate employees. She has also introduced a digital x-ray unit in the DM clinic which is now aiming to become a filmless x-ray unit. The e-Clinic concept, initiated by Ms. Zohoor, linking the DM clinic with thd Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department, has done away with most paper works and reduced customers’ number of visits to the clinic. Palm-tops were introduced for carrying out inspections in health establishments. As Head of the Clinic and Community Health Section, she also introduced several new medical check-ups that resulted in containing communicable diseases.- Date

This award was conferred on Ms. Majida AbdulAziz Al Suwaidi of Finance Department, who has shown an outstanding productivity through supervising an integral methodology to prepare, execute and monitor DM budget (2.9 billion expenses, 2.4 billion revenue). She was a member of GRP project and attended 55 workshops. Besides, she conducted several training courses in order to qualify the end-users. Dubai Municipality’s portal www.dm.gov.ae has been declared the winner in the ‘e-Government category’ of the UAE Contest for eContent. The award was presented at a ceremony held on Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai. The UAE Contest for eContent is organised jointly by Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City and Dubai Knowledge Village.
